Travel anticlockwise from junction 8 of the M25 and you will experience the magnificence of junction 7. It's an exciting four-level stack junction.<\/p>
Even its name is awe inspiring: 'The Merstham Interchange'.<\/p>
But if you dare... try going clockwise instead and you will reverse the junction point for the entire space-time continuum, rolling the dial back to junction 9.<\/p>
<\/p>
Junction 9 has a name too. It is called 'Keith'.<\/p>
But it is more commonly referred to by its shorter nickname: 'Leatherhead'.<\/p>
The leather shops have all closed down now.<\/p>
It is no longer legal to sell or buy heads in this part of Surrey.<\/p>
But that doesn't mean there's not still lots to see and do in Leatherhead which has a Greggs and a Wetherspoons.<\/p>
Most enchanting of all is the Swan Centre.<\/p>
To rejuvenate the high street, the local townsfolk built a centre for swans, like a bird house, but on an enormous and unprecedented scale, with ornate bedrooms, bathrooms and feather beds.<\/p>
It was hoped that if the birds were attracted to settle there, they could, in return for the kindness of the townsfolk, be persuaded to give back rides. The hope was that in time, the swans could be used as a free transportation service around the town and and to outlying villages enabling people to traverse not just land but also the River Mole.<\/p>
It was a great idea - which if successful would have saved significant public money on constructing bridges over the River Mole.<\/p>
Unfortunately the swans never moved in to the Swan centre, instead opting for more attractive packages offered by Swansea council who had a similar idea.<\/p>
This left Leatherhead's Swan Centre to be sold in all it's faded grandeur to Travelodge which still stands to this day. <\/p>
Consequently Mole Valley council finally agreed to build bridges to across the River Mole, accepting that the Swan transportation service was never going to materialise, and the council has also now launched an electric 'Connect' bus service instead of the Swan backies.<\/p>
However all is not lost.
