Celebrating Surrey's favourite Eff word.<\/p>
Effingham is a commonly referenced village in many a joke amongst butchers and pork processing facility workers. <\/p>
But there are many other features to be celebrated in this, a true jewel at the back of Surrey's Crown.<\/p>
Effingham has a railway junction.<\/p>
In the 1960s Effingham's cultural exchange programme with the Soviet block meant that the village was given free architect's designs for a secondary school to serve the children of the village, and every other village.<\/p>
To soften the slightly stark impact of the building and win local approval it was felt the school should be given a nice name.<\/p>
'Shazza' was felt to be too Sussex.<\/p>
'Tarquin' was considered to be typical of the sort of thing Guildford would come up with.<\/p>
'The Howard' seemed the obvious choice: Suggestive of a grandfather who might sit you on their knee and give you a Werther's original.<\/p>
